2024 CALENDAR, THROUGH AUGUST, IS NOW UP.
KAYAK LESSON GIFT CERTIFICATES
The Holiday gifting season is here, and sea kayaking lessons make great gifts. Even though it’s blustery, chilly, and rainy right now, we can be as certain as possible that warmer weather will return next year. How about giving a family member or friend the opportunity to learn how to enjoy sea kayaking, or to improve on their existing skills? A Salish Sea Kayak School Gift Certificate is a popular gift and can be used throughout the coming year. Simply go to Our Classes, and you’ll see the link to the Gift Certificate form on the right side of the page. Fill out the information requested, including the amount of your gift, then go to Cart. Please manually add in 8.7% sales tax. That’s all there is to it! Happy Holidays, everyone!
2023 CALENDAR UPDATED THROUGH OCTOBER
After one of the craziest weather patterns for the first half of the year, summer seems to be arriving (knock wood ๐ ) The Class Calendar has now been completed with the scheduled class offerings through the month of October. However, please remember that SSKS is more than happy to work with you on scheduling if the published dates and times aren’t fitting your needs. In particular, weekdays have the most flexibility, but it can be possible to adjust weekend times. Just get in touch by phone or email to discuss your situation, and, by the way, custom content for lessons often can be arranged too. This early part of the season has been busier than usual, so reserving your class as soon as you can to have the most choice. Here’s hoping to see you on the water soon!
2ND HALF OF CLASS SEASON NOW AVAILABLE
The class schedule for August through October is now available on the Calendar. Don’t forget that SSKS is happy to work with you on dates and times for your instruction, if the posted schedule doesn’t fit your needs, as well as custom tailoring content if you so desire. Now that summer is (finally!) here, the water in Lake Whatcom is getting much warmer and more comfortable for paddling. Hope to see you soon!
SUMMER’S ARRIVING, TIME TO RESERVE YOUR CLASS!
With summer about to get underway, it’s time to schedule your sea kayaking instruction. SSKS provides the highest quality teaching, with both group and private lessons, flexible scheduling when the Class Calendar doesn’t fit your availability, and a range of classes to take you from “never ever” to skill sets to allow you to explore the waters of our region. Safety is emphasized, as PNW lakes and the ocean are cold water environments.
For those interested in learning how to kayak with the traditional Greenland Paddle, sessions are now available. These paddles reduce joint strain and wind resistance, making longer days on the water less fatiguing.
For the greatest selection of times and dates, please sign up early. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, do email or call!
2022 CALENDAR (APRIL – JULY) NOW POSTED
THE 2022 CALENDAR OF CLASSES FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON (APRIL THROUGH JULY) IS NOW ON THE WEBSITE. DON’T FORGET THAT SOMETHING THAT SSKS OFFERS THAT MOST KAYAKING PROGRAMS DON’T: CUSTOM SCHEDULING. SO, IF YOU NEED A DIFFERENT DATE OR TIME FOR A CLASS OR A GROUP OUTING (E.G. A “TASTE OF SEA KAYAKING”), GET IN TOUCH VIA EMAIL OR PHONE. I’LL DO EVERYTHING I CAN TO WORK IT OUT. IN ADDITION, CUSTOM CONTENT AND INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTION IS AVAILABLE*. PLEASE SIGN UP EARLY, AS CLASS SIZES ARE DELIBERATLY KEPT SMALL TO GIVE EACH STUDENT LOTS OF INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION.
*Note: SSKS cannot, at this time, offer kayak rolling instruction.
UPDATES ON BAJA 2022 KAYAKING TRIP
Space is still available for the April 2022 paddle trip! There have been some minor changes, however. Although the trip itself begins the night of April 18th, most of us are arriving on the 16th. Coming in a day or two early is recommended in case of flight delays or “lost” checked baggage. The previous post outlines the basics of the trip, but if you have interest, please contact me ASAP. There are some additional details I need to brief you about.
We will be staying at the Hotel Catedral, in La Paz, which is in a great location for exploring the central part of the city and is close to the waterfront. Any extra nights beyond the 2 included in the package price can be reserved for $90 USD per room/night. This price includes an extensive breakfast buffet.
When contacting Baja Outdoor Activities, the guide service, you should refer to the “Ted Wang Expedition.” Registrations need to be paid in full no later than February 18th, and all arrangements should be made with BOA directly, at this point (although PLEASE let me know!).

BAJA KAYAKING TRIP, APRIL 2022
I’m currently putting together a sea kayaking trip in the Sea of Cortez that begins on April 18th, and limited space is still available. The trip will be based out of La Paz BCS and will consist of guided paddling with a “relaxed” itinerary and includes hotel accommodations in La Paz the night before and the night after paddling. Along with 7 nights beach camping, there will be opportunities for snorkeling, fishing, hiking, and day paddles (empty kayaks). Cost, including all food, boats and gear while kayaking is $1280/person. Single and double (tandem) kayaks will be used. If you have completed the Essentials of Sea Kayaking class with SSKS and/or have equivalent intermediate sea kayaking experience, you should do fine. For more detailed information or to discuss your qualifications, please contact me at info@salishseakayakschool.com or call 888-858-8411 (360-392-8336).
CALENDAR UPDATES
As of July 12th, the Calendar of Classes has been updated through the end of October 2021. The heat wave of early summer has warmed Lake Whatcom to a comfortable temperature at least a month ahead of normal; and while that’s probably not good for our forests, it DOES make learning wet exits and those all important recues much more enjoyable.
Please don’t forget that we’re happy to work with you on custom scheduling and class content tailored to your needs! You’ll note lots of weekdays without classes scheduled, but we can (usually) work around times when other classes are going on.
I hope to see you on the water in the near future and encourage you to reserve your spots as soon as possible. Classes have been filling up.
Happy Kayaking,
Ted
